Shielded Metal Arc Welding classes will be offered 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday evenings at Lyons High School beginning on Wednesday, August 22 and will conclude on December 12. Timothy Slupski, an experienced welder of more than 20 years, will teach the class. The total cost of the course is $336.

First as usual, a drought update is in order and it will be brief. The state is essentially the same as last week. Remember any rainfall after last Tuesday at 8 am isn’t included and some significant rains east of here should have helped. Now on to today’s topic – Agriculture and Society.

The Barton Planetarium will host nine free evening programs this fall, Barton including an all-new line-up of movies never shown at the Barton Planetarium before.

“What were you wearing?” is an art installation on display in the Barton County Court House lobby through Aug. 17 and at the Great Bend Library through Aug. 24. The show will continue its time in Great Bend at Barton Community College in the upper level of the Student Union September 7-24.

First as usual, a drought update is in order. Again, nothing after 8 a.m. this past Tuesday is included. Not much has changed with the western half of Kansas mostly out of drought conditions, this area in moderate drought, and the eastern half of the state, especially in the central Flint Hills in extreme and exceptional drought. Today’s topic isn’t about red or white wine but red or white wheat. You may have heard of white wheat but what is it and why should we plant it?
